What is osteoarthritis (OA)?
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that causes pain and stiffness in the joints. It is the most common type of arthritis in the UK and is the most common rheumatic disease, second only to cardiovascular disease in causing long term disability.
Almost any joint can be affected by osteoarthritis and can be experienced to different degrees, but the condition most often causes problems in the hips, knees and small joints in the hands.
OSTENIL PLUS is one treatment for the symptoms of osteoarthritis and has been specifically developed to treat the condition.

Causes of OA
Joints are exposed to a constant low level of damage in everyday life and usually the body simply repairs itself. With osteoarthritis however, the protective cartilage and fluid that protects the ends of the bone where they meet breaks down faster than they are repaired, causing pain, swelling and stiffness when moving the joint.
The exact causes are not known, but joint injury, other types of arthritis, old age, family history and obesity are several things that are thought to increase the risk of developing the condition.
The three stages of OA
The first indications of osteoarthritis are often a slight stiffness after lying down or sitting for a while, but this discomfort often vanishes soon after the joints are being used again.
As the condition progresses the joint movements become increasingly painful and it may be more difficult to move the joint.
The last stage of the condition is when the joints are painful even when resting, which may cause insomnia. There may also be inflammation and swelling in the joint.
Treating OA
Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition and there is no cure available. However, there are several simple ways to slow the impact and even, in some cases, improve the condition. There are also treatments available to reduce the symptoms.
OSTENIL PLUS is one of the available medications available for the treatment of the symptoms of osteoarthritis. It contains a solution containing a concentration of hyaluronic acid, which is a key component of the synovial fluid that protects the joints where the bones meet.
OSTENIL PLUS is a single injection (per treatment cycle) that is injected directly into the affected joint by a fully qualified clinician. The treatment works to restore the balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid and so can reduce the symptoms of the condition for several months at a time.
However, when using Ostenil alongside a course of physiotherapy, patients can often get enhanced pain relief, joint range of movement improvements, and less swelling.
Other things you can do to treat mild symptoms of osteoarthritis is regular (low impact) exercise, losing weight (if you are overweight), wearing suitable footwear and using special devices to reduce the strain on your joints when completing everyday activities.
If you are living with, or think you may have osteoarthritis, then you should consult your GP about the best course of treatment for you.
